Biowaste inevitably accumulates at home, even if all food is consumed carefully. All food waste generated in the kitchen belongs in biowaste.

Recycling biowaste is important for the environment, as it allows energy and nutrients to be reused. Sorting is also economically beneficial: by recycling, you save on household costs, as the price of mixed waste is higher than biowaste. Our buildings have dedicated waste bins or suction pipes for biowaste.

You can place the following in biowaste:

  • food scraps and spoiled foodstuffs
  • bones, eggshells
  • fruit and vegetable peels and other parts
  • coffee grounds, tea bags, and filter papers
  • plant parts
  • paper towels, tissues, napkins – they absorb moisture
  • solidified fat
  • small wooden sticks (ice cream sticks and toothpicks)

The biowaste bin does not accept:

  • liquids
  • biodegradable diapers and sanitary pads
  • animal waste
  • sweeping dust and vacuum cleaner bags
  • soil and sand
  • plastic bags and packaging.

The drain is not the right place for biowaste

Biowaste should not be poured down apartment drains, as food scraps, especially the fat they contain, can cause blockages in the plumbing. Remember to recycle!

Compost and Biogas from Biowaste

Biowaste is processed by composting or anaerobic digestion to prevent methane from entering the atmosphere. Recycled biowaste is utilized in energy production, and it is also used to produce compost.

How to keep odors at bay

Biowaste can emit odors into the apartment, especially in summer – a few tricks can help with this.

  1. Empty your biowaste bin frequently. Meat and fish products, in particular, should be taken to the waste room without delay.
  2. Keep your biowaste bin clean by washing it.
  3. Cool warm biowaste and allow it to dry before placing it in the bag.
  4. Place used paper towels or an egg carton at the bottom of the biowaste bag – they will absorb liquids.
  5. Use a paper bag or a biodegradable biowaste bag for packaging biowaste. This way, both your home waste bin and the waste room bins will stay clean and avoid causing odor nuisances.
