The residential blocks of Kalasatama in Helsinki will be filled with art in late August, when the Art For All art festival begins. We are participating in the event.
– We were delighted to participate in this art festival. Some of the artworks are located in our Kalasatama buildings or in their vicinity, says Suvi Tuomala, CEO of Setlementtiasunnot.
The theme of the festival is invitation, welcoming a guest.
– We had the idea of a homely space where visitors encounter not only art but also each other. We ended up in Kalasatama because of Setlementtiasunnot’s Viehe 123 block. This intergenerational property perfectly suited our goal of good neighborliness. The three buildings share high-quality common facilities, and Ars Longa also has its own gallery in the building, says festival producer Matti Jänkälä.
– The works seamlessly fit the community spirit of our buildings and enliven the area. It is fascinating to think that every resident has the opportunity to participate in art-making, states Suvi Tuomala.
The public has the opportunity to shape a salt artwork or participate in a tea party
Matti Jänkälä describes the festival as a mix of an open house day, a block party, and invitations among neighbors and guests. The works range from dance performances presented in the yard to textile and audiovisual installations.
– In the Setlementtiasunnot building at Sompasaarenlaituri 6, one can enjoy soup in an artwork exploring communal cooking. On the rooftop floor of Antareksenkatu 3, it is possible to participate in a tea party hosted by an artist, says Jänkälä.
The festival organizers hope that residents will bravely participate in art-making. Jimin Hong’s salt artwork invites the public to shape the installation, and Leena Pylkkö’s Home Cleaning Huisku artwork offers home cleaning services to residents. On Saturday and Sunday, an art workshop for children will also be organized from 2 PM to 4 PM.
The Art For All festival is open from August 25-27. Artists will finalize their works on site the previous week.
