In Setlementtiasunnot’s 4-part YouTube series, residents encounter each other in various everyday situations. How do parties go in the common room? And what about the communal cardboard box crushing event at the recycling point? The series was produced by a student group from Metropolia’s Film and Television degree program.
Setlementtiasunnot and third-year students from Metropolia’s Film and Television degree program launched a collaboration in autumn 2021. The aim was to create four videos for Setlementtiasunnot’s use, showcasing living in Setlementtiasunnot homes.
Workplace collaboration is an integral part of polytechnic education. It takes many forms, one of which is the execution of workplace projects. Students produced a video series for corporate use according to the client’s wishes during the Commissioned Work course. A genuine commissioned project holds great significance at this stage of studies. It brings determination and professionalism to the project.
Video ideas were developed together with the Setlementtiasunnot team, and the project was regularly reviewed together. As the project progressed, the script was refined to match the client’s vision, while also allowing room for the production team’s creative input.
“Workplace projects are specifically chosen based on having sufficient room for maneuver in planning the execution. It is always a pleasure to see how creatively the creators approach ideating and implementing projects. Students dare to be bold, and learning comes precisely from adapting even daring ideas to suit the client’s needs,” says Arto Tuohimaa from Metropolia, the degree program producer and student group supervisor.
The production team included, among others, a scriptwriter, director, producer, cinematographer, editor, sound designer, and lighting technician. The entire team comprised 20 individuals. The students’ roles in the production were naturally determined by their own study modules and interests. Actors and assistants joined on filming days.
In December, the videos were completed and presented to the client, who was extremely satisfied with the final result.
“Today, video is one of the most important ways to tell a story, and now we have an entire video series at our disposal. We can now proudly share the story of friendly Onni and Setlementtiasunnot living with these high-quality videos,” rejoices Marja Mesimäki, Development Manager at Setlementtiasunnot.
Metropolia was also very pleased with the project and its outcome.
“The process was quite educational regarding how many factors must be considered in this type of production to achieve a functional and successful outcome,” states Arto Tuohimaa.
“The Setlementtiasunnot project was very appealing to us as creators because the client gave us enough space to bring our own vision to the project and trusted us with the execution. Communication with the client was effortless and definitely showcased the best aspects of commissioned work,” the students explain.
The working group, which became familiar with Setlementtiasunnot’s operations, particularly appreciated that the facilities offer optimal conditions for creating new connections between residents.
Setlementtiasunnot thanks Metropolia’s production team and its leader Arto for the smoothly executed project and its cheerful outcome! We also wish success to future media professionals!
