We are involved in the recently launched Future Senior Housing project. The project promotes age-friendly living, community-based solutions, and models for independent living for as long as possible.

– It is extremely necessary for us to start planning now how we will meet the future demands related to housing for the elderly, says Real Estate Director Eemeli Lönnqvist from Setlementtiasunnot.

The purpose of the project is to jointly develop new models for senior housing production. In addition to Setlementtiasunnot, the overall project includes the University of Tampere, the Housing Finance and Development Centre of Finland (ARA), the Ministry of the Environment, and a large number of key players in senior housing.

Seniors want to live in a home-like environment

Changes in demographics have highlighted the need to consider fresh perspectives on housing for the elderly. There is also a clear demand for solutions that fall between living alone at home and assisted living, such as community-based housing models for seniors.

– The general trend in the future is to live at home for as long as possible. This challenges us as a property owner to find new ways to create homes and communal spaces. With increasing diversity and technological systems, we want to be responsive to how people can be better considered in housing, Lönnqvist states.

The Future Senior Housing project continues until September 30, 2025. During this time, several senior housing sites in Finland and internationally will be visited, survey and interview material will be collected, and workshops and seminars will be held.
