The autumn harvest was enjoyed and the establishment of an eco-committee was planned at Ormuslinna in Malmi.
The harvest season culminates deliciously at Ormuslinna Settlement House: organic vegetarian food, conjured from seasonal vegetables, is on offer. It truly is local food, as gardener Steven harvested the vegetables the previous day from less than a kilometer away.
We previously reported on Green City Farm, where Setlementtiasunnot is involved as a key partner. Now, the work of spring and summer is being rewarded. Pumpkin soup, served with salad and country bread, steams on the residents’ plates. For dessert, there is, of course, coffee and a bun.
Environmental values are important to Setlementtiasunnot. To ensure that ecological principles are not merely talk, the aim is to establish eco-committees for the buildings. These are informal clubs, shaped by the residents, where activities are formed according to the participants.
According to Setlementtiasunnot Resident Coordinator Laura Hahkala, the idea for the committees originally came from the Hervanta Settlement House in Tampere.
“The idea is to bring together people interested in ecological issues. They can, for example, organize events and excursions.”
Everyone participating in the Harvest Festival receives Provence herbs to take home, meaning bunches of savory, thyme, oregano, and rosemary. Ormuslinna resident Pirkko Luotamo admires the intoxicating scent of the organic herbs. She says her calendar is full of hobbies but considers the eco-committee to be worthwhile.
As it is Food Waste Week, the question is: what happens to leftover food? No worries, bowls and pouches soon appear from the cupboards, in which the soup and salad conveniently travel to residents’ homes for dinner. And here’s another tip for solving the food waste problem.
“If there’s food left over, you can invite your neighbors over!”
