Students participate in the design of the rental building
A topping-out ceremony was held at Setlementtiasunnot’s newest rental building on September 29, 2022, together with contractors, partners, and Setlementtiasunnot staff. The Kontula student housing building is located near diverse services and good transport connections, and its 121 homes will be completed in early spring 2023.
The design of the building has particularly taken into account the needs of young people and students. Setlementtiasunnot and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences signed a cooperation agreement in autumn 2020. The design of the building began by consulting Metropolia students on what kind of living environment they would like to live in and what they consider important in student housing. The surveys and workshops highlighted wishes for shared spaces, energy efficiency, and various recycling opportunities.

– Shared spaces and communal activities reduce feelings of loneliness, which is a particular risk for those coming to study from other localities. Community-based living supports the well-being of young people and students, reflects Suvi Tuomala, CEO of Setlementtiasunnot.
– In the student workshops, we received numerous fresh ideas for the practical implementation of the project. By listening to the target resident group of the building, we ensured that the building would reflect its users, rejoices Marja Mesimäki, Development Manager at Setlementtiasunnot.
Setlementtiasunnot’s student rental apartments are available for degree students aged 18 or over. Applications for apartments open in October.
