Setlementtiasunnot’s Alppikylä building in Helsinki, along with its surrounding residential area, represents Finland in an international competition seeking the best residential area in the Nordic countries. Four video candidates from different countries were selected for the final.
– This news is particularly gratifying at a time when the government is cutting housing benefits and planning reductions in non-profit housing. The significance of social housing production for people’s daily lives and well-being is immense – this is also reflected in our competition video, says Setlementtiasunnot’s CEO Suvi Tuomala.
Alppikylä was a natural choice for Setlementtiasunnot as a competition candidate, as the architecturally unique area, surrounded by nature, is known for its neighborly spirit and strong sense of community.
– In all our buildings, we invest in community, but in our Alppikylä building, the community spirit is particularly strong, says Suvi Tuomala.
Residents, among other things, organize yard work parties, cultivate shared garden boxes, and help each other with daily matters. They also run a food waste distribution for residents in the area.
Winner to be announced in September
It was possible to participate in the NBO Housing Award competition with a one-minute video. 19 candidates registered, seven of whom were from Finland. Four candidates representing different countries were selected for the final.
The competition is organized by Housing Nordic – NBO, a cooperation organization for owners of affordable rental and right-of-occupancy housing in the Nordic countries. The winner of the competition will be announced on September 19th at the Nordic Housing conference in Stockholm.
